International Martini Day at Darling Glebe
Every family has a black sheep.
The martini has five.
Somewhere between Queen Victoria and James Bond, the martini became an icon. Along the way it picked up a few colourful relatives, each with its own personality, questionable decisions and devoted following.
On Friday 19 June, we're reserving the Ferrari Martini Lounge for an evening celebrating one of the world's most enduring cocktails and the delightfully complicated family tree that followed.
Choose your favourite and we'll serve a complimentary Little Darling, inspired by one of the earliest published Martini recipes from more than a century ago.
Think of it as meeting the grandparent before deciding which child inherited the good looks.
Meet the family
1884 | The Martinez
The indulgent original. Rich, aromatic and carrying considerably more luggage than its descendants. The sort of drink that knows where the silver is kept and still writes letters by hand.
1900 | The Tuxedo
Elegant, polished and carrying just enough absinthe to raise one perfectly arched eyebrow. The martini dressed for dinner and quietly judging the table beside it.
1908 | The Gibson
Proof that somebody once looked at a perfectly respectable martini and thought, "Needs more onion."
Remarkably, they were right.
Sharp suit. Dirty secrets.
1919 | The Gimlet
Originally prescribed to sailors.
Which tells you almost everything you need to know about sailors.
Bright, brisk and dangerously easy to trust.
1953 | The Vesper
Created by Ian Fleming for James Bond in Casino Royale.
Confident, stylish and entirely unconcerned with moderation.
The Little Darling
Order any martini from the collection and we'll quietly place a Little Darling beside it.
A miniature martini inspired by one of the earliest published recipes.
Small glass.
Big personality.
A tiny sip of cocktail history with our compliments.
